Southern Serow - Naemorbedus Sumatraensis Stamp

Related to other herbivores, Serows in the genus Capricornis have relatively short bodies and long legs. The upperparts of their bodies are usually black or dark grey sometimes with reddish tinges. Their under parts are paler. A long shaggy mane of hair runs along their backs.

Both sexes of the serow are similar in size with short slightly curved horns. There is a distinctive large open gland in front of each of their eyes. The serow mainly inhibits steep forested cliffs including limestone mountains. They can also be found in lowlands and on off-shore limestone islands as well. Serows will come out to feed in more open areas in the early morning and late evening. The serow will eat almost all vegetation.

Mainly solitary, serows come together only to mate. One or usually two young are born after a gestation period of 7-8 months. The young may stay with the mother for up to a year. The serows' territory spans from India to southern China. This includes most of the mainland in South-East Asia and Sumatra. It is believe that serows have great healing properties. This is the reason they are hunted till today. Their numbers in the wild have decreased and today, serows are totally protected under the Protection of Wildlife Act.

Couroupita guianensis Aubl.

Origin of Scientific name: The genus name Couroupita comes from the South American name for this plant, couroupitoutoumou. The species name guianensis comes from the Guianas, referring to the place of origin of the botanical specimen used as reference to name this plant.

Family: Lecythidaceae

Vernacular names : pokok peluru meriam (Malaysia), buah kanon (Indonesian), sala-lan kaa (Thailand), dau lau (Vietnam), cannonball tree (English).

Original habitat : South America, It is a tree of the flood plains of the northern parts of South America. In its natural habitat the tree grows into a fine, straight tree, with a crown of branches high up, and a profusion of its curious short flowering branches, from about 3 meters from the ground to the crown. The timber appears to have no particular use.

Camellia nitidissima

Large shrub requiring a warm, humid site in partial shade. The foliage has deeply indented veins which is quite different to most Camellias. The new growth is an attractive purple color. Best suited to woodland conditions. The soil must be well-drained soil and remain constantly damp. It produces the only yellow flowers known in the genus. In time, hybridizers are hoping to develop a new range of colors to include yellow, orange, apricot and peach.

Schima brevifolia

This beautiful, small tree is common on Kinabalu from 2,500 to 3,000 meters above sea level. The rather similar S. wallichii (Madang Changkoh) grows on hills in the Peninsular, especially Penang Hills, and is distinguished by its smaller flowers and larger leaves. It is a moderate-sized tree.

Men's World Cup Hockey Stamp

10th Men's Hockey World Cup 2002

For the first time in the history of international hockey, Kuala Lumpur is the only city chosen as the World Cup more than once. The 10th men's Hockey World Cup will be held for more than 2 weeks starting from the 24th February till 9th March 2002. Countries participating to vie for this prestigious title includes from Europe, the defending champion Netherlands, European Champions Germany, 1998 World Cup runner-up Spain, England, Poland and Belgium. Asia has 5 nations participating for the first time - host nation Malaysia, Olympic silver medalist South Korea, four times World Cup titleholders Pakistan, past champion India and Japan. Argentina and World Cup debutantes Cuba are the representatives from the American continent while Olympic bronze medalist Australia and New Zealand bears the hopes of the Asia Pacific, South Africa, in the meantime is the sole entry from Africa. As the main venue for the tournament, the National Hockey Stadium Bukit Jalil, located 20 kms from the city will see 72 matches being played by 16 countries taking part.

In conjuction with the 10th Men's World Cup Hockey held in Kuala Lumpur, Pos Malaysia Berhad took the initiative to record this international acclaimed tournament by producing stamps and first day covers. These stamps priced at 30 sen, 50 sen and RM1, showcases paintings of world-class players in interesting moves.

The National Hockey Stadium Bukit Jalil being the main venue of the event has been incorporated as the background of the Miniature Sheet, which can be obtained at RM3. This stamp collection is a must for all.
