Royal Heritage Stamps History of Negeri Sembilan

Negeri Sembilan was originally the home of indigenous Malays or Proto Malays. In the early 14th Century, the Sumatrans from MInangkabau came to Negeri Sembilan bringing with them their own culture and traditions. Inter-marriages between the indigenous Malays and Minangkabau people produced a new tribe called Biduanda. The current chieftains of the state originated from the Biduanda tribe. Prior to the "Yang Di-Pertuan Besar", Negeri Sembilan was ruled by the Johor Sultanate.

In 1773, the state chieftains invited Raja Melewar and bestowed upon him the Royal title of "Yang Di0Pertuan" ir "Yam Tuan". It was the Royal Heritage Miniature Sheetdawn of a new royal institution in Negeri Sembilan. An interesting custom of the state is the Perpatih Custom, which bestow more importance to women. Founded by Dato' Perpatih Nan Sebantung, the importance to women lies in the inheritance and blood lineage.

The Life and Times of His Royal Highess DYMM Tuanku Ja'afarIbni Al-Marhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Yang Di-Perutan Besar of Negeri Sembilan.

His Royal Highness DYMM Tuanku Ja'afar Ibni Al-Marhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman was born in Kelang, Selangor on 19th July 1922. He is the second son of the first Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Marhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman Ibni Al-Marhum Tuanku Muhammad.

His early education was obtained at the Seri Menanti Malay School, Kuala Pilah from 1928-1933 and later at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar from 1933-1944. He continued his studies , interrupted by the Second World War, in 1951 and obtained a Law Degree from the University of Nottingham, England. Subsequently, he took up Political Science and French Language at the London School of Economics in 1952.

Royal Heritage First Day CoverDynamic and broadminded, he was entrusted with several important overseas assignments before he ascended the throne as the 10th DYMM Yang Di-Pertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan Darul Khusus on 18th April 1967. His Highness was elected as the Deputy Yang Di-Pertuan Agong on 10th June 1979 and retained the position for 10 years His Royal Highness was elected as Yang Di-Pertuan Agong on 26th April 1994 to 25th April 1999.

The Long Kris

The Long Kris which comes in eight blades are very important items in every Royal ceremonial customs in Negeri Sembilan. These items are placed on the right-hand corner of the throne in the Balai Rong Seri of the sSeri Menanti Palace. All in all there are eight blades with one blade covered in yellow cloth. The Long Keris was originated from Pagar Ruyung, Sumatera.

The hilt of the keris comes in three forms:
  • A horned-carved hilt.

  • A hilt made of reddish-chocolate brown wood and
  • A flowered-shaped carved hilt made of reddish black wood.
Balai Rong Seri

Balai Rong Seri is a hall where the chieftains, Undang Yang Empat together with Tengku Besar Tampin, seek audience before His Royal Highness Duli Yang Maha Mulia Tuanku Yang Di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan. The Balai Rong Seri has been used for the installation of His Royal Highness Tuanku Yang Di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan subce 1930.

Changgai Puteri

The states's emblem features a shield with nine stalk of paddy and nine-pointed star beneath it signifying the unity of nine states. The top of the shield features the sword and the sheath with the Changgai Puteri staff in the centre. The emblem and the state flag share the same colours which are black, yellow and red.

The sword and the Changgai Puteri represent the DYMM Yan Di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan's personal Sceptre of Regalia since 1948.

Seri Menanti Palace

Royal Heritage RM1 SheetThe old Seri Menanti Palace is a unique structure made of wood. It was first built in 1902 abd was completed in 1908 to replace Istana Pulih which was razed by the British Forces who were pursuing Yam Tuan Antah during the battle at Bukit Putus. The official inauguration of the palace was carried out by DYMM Yang Di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Muhammad Ibni Yam Tuan Antah. The Palace was the royal residence if His Royal Highness until 1931 before they moved to the new palace which was built not far from the old palace.

The Palace is four storey's high. The original plan was designed by two Malay master craftsmen Kahar and Taib. The Palace has 99 wooden pillars including four central posts measuring 67 feet. These four main posts were acquired from Bukit Pergai, Jelebu. The timber especially "penak" timber was obtained from Bukit Tinggi. The unique feature of the palace is that it was built using the traditional technique of wooden joints (pasak) instead of iron nails.

STAMPS ON THE ROYAL HERITAGE OF NEGERI SEMBILAN LAUNCHED BY DYMM TUANKU JA’AFAR IBNI AL-MARHUM TUANKU ABDUL RAHMAN, YANG DI-PERTUAN BESAR NEGERI SEMBILAN

Pos Malaysia today issued a special collection of stamps known as “Warisan DiRaja Negeri Sembilan” (Royal Heritage Stamps of Negeri Sembilan) in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the rule of His Royal Highness DYMM Tuanku Ja’afar ibni Al-Marhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Yang Di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan Darul Khusus. His Royal Highness graciously launched the stamps at the Royal Adelphi Hotel in Seremban today.

The launch was also attended by DYMM Tunku Ampuan Negeri Sembilan Darul Khusus, Tuanku Najiha Binti Tuanku Besar Burhanudin, Menteri Besar Negeri Sembilan and other invited guests. Also present were YBhg Tan Sri Adam Kadir, Chairman of Pos Malaysia and Services Holdings Berhad and YBhg Dato’ Idrose Mohamed Managing Director of Pos Malaysia Berhad.

DYMM Tuanku Ja’afar has ruled negeri Sembilan for 40 years and under his rule, all levels of society have enjoyed the benefits of progress and development.

“The Royal Heritage Stamps were produced in honour of His Royal Highness’ 40th Anniversary of his rule as well as to express our appreciation of His Royal Highness’ efforts towards enhancing the knowledge on the unique royal heritage of Negeri Sembilan. We are privileged for this opportunity to work with the State of Negeri Sembilan to produce these new stamps and to demonstrate our admiration to His Royal Highness for all his contributions towards championing the preservation of the culture and heritage of Negeri Sembilan,” said YBhg Dato’ Idrose Mohamed, Managing Director of Pos Malaysia Berhad.

The stamps, 30 mm x 40 mm in size are printed in sheets of 20 on SPM watermark, phosphor coated paper and are available in three denominations 30 sen, 50 sen and RM 1. There are three designs featured on the stamps.
  • 30 sen : Long Keris
    The first design is the Long Keris which comes in eight blades and are considered as very important items in every Royal customs in Negeri Sembilan. These items are placed on the right-hand corner of the throne in the Balai Rong Seri of the Seri Menanti Palace. All in all, there are eight blades with one covered in yellow cloth. The Long keris originated from Pagar Ruyung, Sumatera.

  • 50 sen : Balai Rong Seri

The Balairong Seri has been used for the installation of His Highness Yang Di-Pertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan since 1930.

  • RM 1 : Portrait of DYMM Tuanku Ja’afar ibni Al-Marhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman
    The third stamp features a portrait image of His Royal Highness Tuanku Jaafar Ibni Al-Marhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman. The stamp also features the image of the sword and the sheath with the Changgai Puteri staff in the centre. The Changgai Puteri represents the sovereignty of the Yang Di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan.

First Day Cover at 30sen each can be purchased at all post offices nationwide. Folders at RM5 each is only available at selected post offices.
